Who would’ve thought the kid sent to remedial reading classes would end up reading books for a living?

It’s true, his elementary school teacher sent him to a program for struggling readers – but soon enough he was that kid constantly getting in trouble for his nose in a book, instead of listening to teachers.

Joel is a bearded, flannel-wearing SAG-AFTRA performer from the Pacific Northwest that has leant his voice to many middle grades books for Learning Ally, a non-profit providing reading solutions for struggling students. Raised

by his two Mom’s (🏳️‍🌈) surrounded by - and often drenched in - water, he also has a deep affinity for Colorado, where he spent much time tromping through mountains with his Dad and Brother, partying with his large Hispanic family. No joke, that side of his family knows how to party! Joel gets much inspiration and support from his wife and two kids (2 and 3 year olds!), whom he can’t wait to drive around and road trip in their bright green 1978 VW bus. Yes, that’s his bus in the pictures.

Combining a history of stage/radio/and musical performance with a degree in Audio Production from The Art Institute of Seattle in 2011, Joel eventually got his act together and realized that audiobook narration was his calling. Since then he has worked extensively with Carol Monda, Shannon Parks, and is a graduate of Sean Allen Pratt’s Nonfiction narration curriculum. Joel is all about that continuing education, and is constantly seeking out workshops and coaches to aid in his performance and business skills.

He is a professionally certified ballroom dance instructor, and a master of picking up hobbies and putting them back down. Several that have stood the test of time are his love of playing music (drums and ukulele especially), rock climbing, traveling in his 1978 Volkswagen hippie van, and working with sourdough bread. Someday he will succeed in his unending quest to bake the perfect homemade pizza

Accents

With a natural Pacific Northwest accent, and capable of performing many Southern dialects, Joel is capable of performing many characters that need the flavor of an accent, and always strives to voice a character authentically and responsibly.
