LJ Segura

Born in Washington State and raised between my "lesbian white moms’" in the Pacific Northwest and my "Mexican dad" and family in Colorado, I've got a broad mixture of cultural influences that have shaped who I am. My regular sojourn between the two locale's always felt like flying to totally different planets, where I navigated my identity as a mop-topped Mexican skater-kid in the PNW, and a goofy straightlaced white-kid trying to hang with my rap loving saggy pants wearing Mexican/Hispanic cousins.

I'll always carry both places with me, and love that I can access such a diverse set of family, friends, and experiences when crafting my performance and inhabiting characters.

For books that reflect my own Hispanic/Latine heritage, I use the name I’m known by when with my family in Colorado - LJ Segura. The name “LJ” or Little Joel, comes from my dad, “Big Joel”; or, if you’re my wife PJ… for Papa Joel.
